Chat and scopes

About 3 minutes

LocalBrain includes an AI assistant that reasons over your notes. It works at two scopes, so you can stay narrow or go wide.

Note scope

Chat about the note you have open. This is the right scope for questions about one file, or for rewriting, summarizing, and expanding a passage. When the note belongs to a project with a compiled context page, that page is loaded into the conversation too.

Vault scope

Chat across your whole brain. LocalBrain builds an index of your notes so the model can find connections and cite the right files, then answers with your vault as its context. Use it for "what did we decide about pricing?" questions that span many notes.

Mention specific notes

Type @ to pull any note into the conversation by name, regardless of scope. Handy when you want the model to look at two or three specific files.

Your chats are yours. Conversations are saved into a Chats folder in your vault as markdown, so they become part of your knowledge base like anything else. Chat needs an API key.
